Nandini Prabakaran from GIIS Queenstown IBDP year1, has always admired how writers and poets are able to seamlessly teleport readers to a world that is entirely their own. This interest of hers had started to grow since Grade 6 during her studies in GIIS East Coast campus. She began to write poems and most of them in this book were written during her grade 9 and grade 10 years. A few poems required a lot of extended research like “the lone wolf” “pain and protest” and “immaterial”.

Exploring stories and thoughts limitlessly

According to Nandini, the reason behind naming her collection, as ‘A Familiar face’ is that the feelings and experiences reflected by these poems that she feels are commonly faced and known to all people who have out grown and are going through the teenage phase. Thus, she believes that reading her book will make people feel a familiar sentiment or even nostalgia. As readers flip through the pages they will feel as though they are seeing a familiar face.

A small ceremony was held to recognize her effort and it was held on 25th June in Chennai, India for which her family and friends were invited. She is hoping to publish the book through a formal process/publisher near future. The launch of her book had Thiru. S. Srinivasan, General Manager, Kone Elevators, Tmt. Isaiarasi Balamuthuswamy, Poet & Retired AHM, Thiru. S. Balasundaram, Literary Enthusiast, and Thiru. V. Sridharan, Educationist & Motivator as guest of honours.

The collection of her poems reflects on the feelings and emotions of a teenager in today’s fast paced world. It ruminates the unsung thoughts of a typical teenager and their opinion about the world and the people surrounding them.

Mr. Atchula Subrahmanyam, IGCSE/IBDP Teacher of English, GIIS Singapore motivated her and also gifted the book with his foreword.

GIIS is very proud of her achievement and kudos to the efforts of her parents as well as her English teacher for recognizing her talent and motivating her throughout the whole process.
